Are Game Compilations for Collectors?
By CodingGenius
As someone who frequented arcades during their heyday, there is nothing like starting an old game whose name you didn't know and realizing that you've beaten it many times before.
Many publishers have recently opened their vaults and made collections available for the last generation of consoles (PS2, XBox, GC). These releases often included reworked graphics and games that were not released stateside, all at a price of less than $2 per game!
Some of my favorite compilations include:
Intellivision Lives! -- Collection of games from my favorite old system, the Intellivision. The best part of the INTV was its unique controller, which is not comparable to those of any of the current gen systems. Though it is enjoyable to be able to play the games without having to dig out the old system and hook it up, it is frustrating not to have all 12 buttons and the disc available.
Good Titles: Night Stalker, Snafu, Skiing
Misses: Boxing, Vectron
Best Bonus Feature: Original Boxart from all games, great watercolors
Capcom Classics Collection -- I've always loved Capcom's arcade games, but many of their early ports were underpowered due to the hardware of early consoles. Since a lot of these games only required a joystick and a few buttons, today's modern controllers match it well.
Good Titles: Ghosts 'n' Goblins, 1943, Final Fight
Misses: Mercs, Son Son
Best Bonus Feature: Additional options for Street Fighter
Midway Arcade Treasures -- Another arcade pioneer, Midway was a symbol of quality. Again, the current gen controllers easily work with today's controllers.
Good Titles: Rampart, Paperboy, Rampage, Smash TV
Misses: Joust 2, Stargate
Best Bonus Feature: Interviews with development teams
