Backwards compatibility has been an issue in console gaming for 30+ years. Here is a listing of backwards-compatible machines and what media they support and how (directly or with an adapter). I'm leaving off information about the e-reader. for now. Feel free to add any relevant information that I've missed.
• Atari 7800 plays Atari 2600 titles directly.
• Colecovision plays Atari 2600 titles with an adapter.
• Coleco Adam can play Atari 2600 games directly.
• Genesis plays Sega Master System titles with the Power Base Converter.
• JVC X'EYe plays Sega Master System titles with circuit cards from Power Base Converter (must remove housing).
• Sega CDX play Sega Master System titles with circuit cards from Power Base Converter (must remove housing).
• Sega Game Gear plays SMS games with an adapter.
• Pioneer Laseractive plays Genesis, Sega CD, Turbografx-16 and Turbo-CD games with two adapters. Can also use Power Base converter to play Master System games (must remove housing).
• Supergrafx can play Turbografx-16 games directly.
• Super NES can play Gameboy and Gameboy Color games with Super Game Boy adapter.
• Neo Geo AES can play MVS arcade carts with an adapter.
• Nintendo Gamecube can play Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and Gameboy Advance games with Gameboy Player.
• Gameboy Color can play Gameboy games.
• Gameboy Advance can play Gameboy and Gameboy Color games.
• Original DS can play Gameboy Advance games directly. Later models cannot.
• Neo Geo Pocket Color can play Neo Geo Pocket games directly.
• Swancrystal can play Wonderswan games directly.
• Playstation 2 can play PS1 games directly.
