Early on in 1989 a company called Maxis released its first product they made, SimCity. This was the first city-building game of any type and it made revolutionary strides in the series of Sim that was about to erupt in the 1990s. I remember when my parents first computer, complete with Windows 95 gave me a free copy of this. I was hooked from the start. Since 1989, SimCity has been ported to consoles and PCs alike on many platforms. Little did Maxis know what they were going to be working on next would spawn an entire universe of Sim games including the one that started the party on a high scale, SimCity 2000.
SimCity 2000 was first released in 1993 for Macs and for DOS, 1994 came the Amiga and not until 1995 did we get it for Windows, and that was when I first tried this monster of depth and straight up fun. From the start you realize you're in for a big undertaking when you get your plain chunk of land, of which you can edit terrain by the way, and you realize you have to build a whole town! Everything from power lines and power plants right down to the type of power plant you want, which there is 9 types, each having different traits that you may like or dislike. Roads, bus stations, rail systems, parks, stadiums you name it and it probably a choice to build. You find out later on, if you fail to build civil authorities, people get ticked off pretty easily when there house is on fire and no fire department to put it out. After you get going you get the feel for it pretty quickly and can start throwing your town together without much problem.
SimCity isn't just about building a town; it is also about building an infrastructure. You are also in charge of taxes and allocation of funds to make your town run smooth. Cut your police force budget and crime will rise, cut fire department spending and you will have more fires. Everything has a reaction that you have to find a happy medium to keep things rolling smoothly. A newspaper will come every so often and tell you what needs work and what is going smoothly. It may tell you your approval rating and what the budget looks like for your town. It is kind of handy to say the least. Another cool little thing is the query tool where you can name your buildings or whatever you place. Totally awesome tool to help customize your own little town, also handy if you want to make it twisted and gross!
One thing that kept me playing was the lack of actual victory. Besides having a very solid town where things are running smoothly, there really isn't a way to win the game. That being sad after a few years of prosperity usually something happens in town. Riots, tornado, hurricane, even an alien attack can happen and you have to milk your town through each disaster.
SimCity 2000 came out on tons of platforms. The US saw the release on Mac and Dos in 1993, Windows in 1995, SNES in 1996, Playstation in 1997 and even the GBA in 2003. Other games that spun off of SimCity is truly insane and incredible. SimCity 3000, SimCity 4, and SimCity Societies are all basic expansions that came directly from the game itself. Now others like SimAnt, SimCopter, SimEarth, SimHealth, Streets of SimCity, SimTower, SimFarm, SimGolf, and many many others. The DS has a newer version out right now for under $20 and is based on SimCity 3000 and seems to be a ton of fun on the small screen.
