Basics
Number of Games(at time of printing):
At the moment: about 752. By the time of printing, it will probably be more like 760.
Number of Systems:
8. Microsoft: Xbox and Xbox 360. Sony: PS2, PSP, and PS3. Nintendo: GameCube, GBA SP and DS.
When did you start collecting?
I started gathering a collection of games back in 2002 when I got my Xbox, which at that time was my first console. At least it was the first console that I went out and bought and owned all by myself.
What was your first system?
My family had an Atari 2600 when it first came out, which we all loved and played extensively. I remember playing a games like "Entombed" and "Fast Eddie" that the video game world has since forgotten about.
What was your first game?
I think my first game for the Xbox was Azurik: Rise of Perathia..
Where does your screen name come from?
On the original Xbox, I was on Xbox Live and then there was like a two year stretch when I wasn't. When I went to get back on Live to play Halo 2, I had to think of a new gamertag since my last one was no longer available. I wanted to play Halo 2 really bad and I thought it would be funny to have a gamertag that in Halo 2 would say something like: "You were killed by someNONSENSE"...
To this day that gamertag is used as my gamespot account name, even though my gamertag is now originalKILLJOY. I wish I could change it because it sounds kind of goofy to have people calling me "some".. hehe
When did you feel a tipping point from gamer to both gamer and game collector?
Probably about the time I found the CCU. I had a collection of more than 300 games at the time. Somewhere along the line I realized I enjoy collecting games as well as playing them. I think I was inspired by my brother's collection of a couple hundred games.
We have that effect on people, we are like a virus What are your goals as a game collector, how have you developed them, and how do you feel about your progress toward them?
As for actual game collecting, I would like to acquire all the games that make it to my wish list. Of course I invariably also end up with lots of games that were never on my wish list, but that is the fun of collecting.
There are lots of gaps in series that I would like to fill. For example, I recently acquired a copy of Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly - Director's Cut. This is the first Fatal Frame game that I own, even though I have wanted those games for the longest time. Well, now my goal is get the rest of the series. I'd also like to get the complete Mario Party collection in mint condition for the GameCube for example.
I don't look at my video game collection as an investment. I basically collect for my own enjoyment.
How many games, systems, etc. are "enough"?
I don't think the word "enough" is the correct word. I don't buy games because I think I don't have enough, I buy games because I enjoy them and I enjoy building an awesome video game collection. So as long as I enjoy playing and collecting games, I will continue in this fun and rewarding hobby.
What's your proudest moment as a game collector?
My proudest moments are when I finally acquire a good copy of hard to find games that I have had on my wish list for a long time. Recent examples that come to mind are my acquisitions of Dreamfall: The Longest Journey (new) and KOTOR 2 (used) for my Xbox collection.
What's your least proud moment as a game collector?
Trading three games and still paying $35 for True Crime: Streets of LA at Gamestop. Stupid! But the good news is I learned from my mistake and have since re-acquired those three games and no longer trade games toward new games. And I rarely shop at Gamestop anymore, so its all good now.
Owned.Where/how do you store it all?
My goal is to have a dedicated game room with enough wall space to house an organized video game library, where I don't have to worry about running out of room for all the shelf space I need. Right now I have one wall with shelves which has room for about 1000 media titles. I'd like to have enough wall space for about 2-3 times as much shelving. That thought makes me grin..
What's your favorite part of your collection?
My Xbox 360 collection. I got my Xbox 360 Elite in August of 07 and my Xbox 360 game collection is already the largest out of all my consoles. It just exceeded 200 games and I find myself playing my Xbox 360 more than any other console.
I would be proud of that, figure most 360 games are at least $45-50 New. So would those be the most valuable and/or rare items in your collection? If no, then what is?
Hmm, I don't know about rare or valuable. I probably don't have any games that are too rare or hard to acquire. To me they are worth what I paid for them. The above mentioned Fatal Frame II seemed pretty rare to me though.
Sometimes value is what they are worth to you, like you said. What would you like to improve in your collection?
Hmm, I would just like to fill in the missing pieces for various series. I have already gone through and replaced defective or dirty game cases with all new cases, and all my games are complete with instruction booklets in good shape...
What do you think was your best deal while game buying?
Oh man, I have found so many good deals in the past year... Infinite Undiscovery for $18.95 comes to mind as a recent example.
That is a good deal, I would buy it for that and I don't have a 360. What item in your collection do you feel you overpaid for?
Two games come to mind. I actually remember paying full MSRP ($50) for Blinx The Time Sweeper (Xbox) and Starfox Adventures (GameCube). I didn't know what I was doing in those days.
What do you feel is the strangest or weirdest item in your collection?
Giants Citizen Kabuto (PS2) and Battle Engine Aquila (Xbox). I don't know why, but these strike me as strange or weird. I've played them both and they are not bad games though.
What item(s) do you not have in your collection that people are surprised to hear you don't have?
I don't have a copy of either FF7 or FF8.
Takes you off my friends list. Ahem, anyway... Is there any way you'd ever stop collecting?
Sure, I can think of reasons. Either it becomes totally uninteresting to me, or we have a post-apocalyptic situation where there is no more electricity to run my consoles and the struggle for survival takes precedence over entertainment.
Do you have a funny story about your collection?
I couldn't think of an answer for this one so I asked my wife if she had any ideas. She said I should mention the time she bought me a copy of God of War for the PS2 as a gift. She overpaid for it and paid extra for expedited shipping so that it would get to me on time, not knowing that there were cheaper copies of the game to be found on shelves anywhere games are sold... Doh! lol...
That stuff happens, you have to smarten them up a bit! Have you ever had to move your collection to another house? What was it like?
Yes, when I had about 200 games. I had them nicely packed into boxes. I didn't mind it too much because I had fun packing and unpacking them. Weird, I know.
If your significant other told you no more games, what would you do?
We'd probably have a fight, but I would win and get my way.
What percentage of your games are still sealed?
I just counted 160 games still sealed. What percentage is that of 760 games? About 21%!
That is quite a large amount. What percentage of your game have you actually played? Completed?
Probably about 40% played, and about 3% completed. (Depending on the definition of completed..)
Thanks for your time!
No Problem, it was fun!
