In 1989, Sega released one of the games that really brought my attention to the Sega Genesis, Golden Axe. Although it was released for other systems, such as Arcade, Amiga, Sega Master System and even the PC a year later. Golden Axe was one of the first true "Beat-em Up" games that I really took a liking to.
You start off the game being able to choose between the actual game or a mini-game called "The Duel". Once you choose what adventure you feel like partaking in, you can choice one of the 3 character choices, the warrior, dwarf, or some chick wearing a tiny bikini. Choosing the character you want depends on the kind of person you are I guess. I was always one to take on the dwarf even though he had the least amount of magic slots. The girl had the most magic slots if you were more into that s-tyle of things.
You begin basically thrown into an area where usually enemies come at you in the form of 2 or 3 at a time. Sometimes they are riding on certain lizard type creatures or dragons later in the game when you can spit fire or fireballs with them instead of your attacks. They can be fun to use and usually stay around until you get hit the third time and then take off to safer ground leaving you back on your feet.
As you make your way through the stages, there is a map that draws your path to show where you are going. Also between stages is when the magic trolls and sometimes the food trolls come about. At times the blue magic trolls come about during stage-play as well. Simply smack-em and they spit out a blue bottle to pick up. You can only pick up a certain number depending on your character so don't save them up.
The magic you can use is really basic, the dwarf can use a lighting base spell brings down forth destruction from the sky!! Actually he is the worst magic and can only save up 4 bottles of the blue stuff. The girl is probably the best at magic, can save up 9 bottles of blue stuff, and can summon down a pretty sweet big time looking dragon. The warrior is right in the middle of the two and uses a magic based on a quake type casting.
The variety of enemies in Golden Axe varies from stage to stage. Some enemies look the same as previous stages, but are stronger later in the game. Skeletons and big time titan looking characters with some huge hammers are a common scene. Certain stages you can lead characters to fall of ledges and such so you don't always have to fight them. This is a plus as the difficulty of this game is probably higher then most games out now days. If you play on normal mode you get 3 hits and you die. You get 3 deaths then you can continue your game up to 3 times. This is not very much when you think of how much you fight.
Golden Axe went on to have 2 sequels that came out for the Genesis, Golden Axe 2 and 3. Also Golden Axe: The Duel came out for the Sega Saturn in 1995 bringing the last game of the Golden Axe era to a close. With the Next-Gen consoles out now, a revitalized version for the Xbox 360 has since come out, as well as the same version for the Nintendo Wii. Later this year the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 will release Golden Axe: Beast Rider which looks to bring back this gem into its original glory of being one of the best beat-em games on the market in the early '90s.
